While our main focus in orchestra is learning our instruments and playing lots of music in concerts, it's not just about the work. Orchestra is a great place to meet lots of other kids, go to social events, and most of all, make life-long friendships!
Cockrill Middle School opened in 2008, and since then has grown to a program with over 200 students in grades 6-8. There are 4 levels of orchestra at Cockrill.
Beginner: students with no prior experience playing an instrument
Philharmonic: students with 1-2 years experience
Sinfonietta: students with 1-3 years experience
Honors: students with 2-3 years experience
Students have orchestra classes daily, and perform many times throughout the year. In addition to formal concerts, students also perform in solo & ensemble contests, All-Region concerts, and the 3 levels with experience perform in UIL concert and sightreading evaluations.
We also have lots of fun in orchestra! We have several socials throughout the school year, and some of the things we do include:
Urban Air
Pinstack
NRH2O water park
and we also have movie parties and holiday parties, too!
6th grade is the time to learn to play a stringed instrument! Our beginner classes are geared towards students with zero musical knowledge. No previous experience is needed. In fact, we prefer that students have zero stringed instrument experience in our beginner classes! No need to rush off and get an instrument and start lessons. We will teach your student EVERYTHING they need to know to be successful in orchestra.
There are 4 instruments students can choose to play:
Violin
Viola
Cello
Bass
